Talk With Your Neighbors
a simple conversation can lead to big change
While starting a conversation with your neighbors can be difficult, it's important to remember that common ground does exist - you will both be affected by the same freeway. To help you get the conversation started, we've outlined some basic "Dos and Donts", and we've broken down these concepts into three main areas: Before, During, and After the conversation.
Before the conversation
- Familiarize yourself with the common questions around freeway development, and the educational resources located at the bottom of this page.
- If you plan a face-to-face meeting with your neighbor, print out the Air Quality, Noise Pollution documents located at the bottom of this page.
- Prefer to email instead? Download and email your neighbor the PDF versions of the Air Quality and Noise Pollution documents located at the bottom of this page.
During the Conversation
- Ask your neighbor what they know about the new freeway, if they have any questions, and Get an idea of where they're at.
- If you haven't done so already, pass along (or, ask if you can email) the Air Quality and Noise Pollution reports.
- Be as open and transparent. Let them know that this issue is important to you, and that you'd like to get their input and feedback. This will help in both getting them educated, and in getting the conversation started.
After the Conversation
- Depending on your comfort level with your neighbor, a follow-up face-to-face meeting, phone call, or email is recommended.
- If applicable, contact your HOA and request a town hall meeting be put together. This is a great way to get everyone together and get questions answered. Learn how to host an effective town hall.
- Keep the conversation going.
